Poverty eradication and Youth Unemployment

Uganda is a country that has been poverty-stricken over years. GRC advocates for government and private sector programmes aimed at fighting poverty in Uganda especially among youths and women. The centre undertakes research, awareness raising and community sensitization and advocacy to promote economic freedom especially through advocacy against unfair economic policies such as heavy taxes that worsen the cost of doing business. In all our research and advocacy activities, Gateway Research Centre employs Participatory Action Research (PAR) to increase evidence-based finding that inform policy based on key priority challenges in society.

SEVENTABLEs

This is Gateway Research Centre’s recent innovation meaning ‘Seven on Table’ initiated in November 2021.  It is a round table policy discussion made of 7 participants, 4 from Gateway Research Centre Uganda and 3 external stakeholders. It is a discussion forum aimed at generating well-grounded priority policy recommendations to share with the relevant policy makers. Each SEVENTABLE Policy forum leads to generation of a policy brief to advocate for the proposed policy reforms.

Gateway Citizens’ Forums

Gateway Research Centre mobilizes citizens to participate in quarterly discussion platforms where they directly interact with their local leaders especially at local government level such as District Chairpersons and Councilors. Citizens raise their concerns during the forums against the promises of their local government leaders. Gateway Citizens’ Forum provide an open platform for citizen to participate in the local government planning, decision making and accountability processes since the leaders present their achievements vis-à-vis the district strategic workplans. The overall goal of Gateway Citizens’ Forums is to enhanced citizen-oriented service delivery.

Governance and Human Rights

Gateway Research Centre conducts civic engagement forums, policy dialogues involving local government leaders, Parliament, Line Ministries, researchers, religious leaders, researchers, influential entrepreneurs, and civil society to promote citizens’ participation in government decision making to strengthen inclusive governance, accountability, citizen-centered service delivery, human rights and rule of law.

Education

The education system of Uganda has been improving over years since 1986 when President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni came to power. However, over years, it has been characterized by the massive commercialization of the sector by many educationists who have ended up building high quality academic institutions mostly attracting the rich. GRC advocates for the establishment and growth of academic institutions to include children from both poor and rich families for a better Uganda. GRC undertakes research studies on education to provide evidenced based pragmatic policy recommendations to overcome educational challenges in Uganda.

Gender and Women Empowerment

Despite Uganda’s efforts to empower women, they are still facing inequalities and patriarchal supremacy which have to be minimized to promote equity in existence in order to encourage women’s participation in Uganda’s social, political, economic and technological development process. GRC undertakes research studies, practical skills trainings and offers financial assistance to women especially organized women groups and associations to permit women’s positive participation in the economic development process of Uganda. The centre advocates for policies that promote women’s economic freedom and capacity to participate in entrepreneurial growth in Uganda.

Agriculture and Food Security

All regions of Uganda including; Central, Eastern, Western and North have been affected by the lack of reliable food supply which has affected all citizens equally. GRC advocates for measures undertaken by various stakeholders to promote food security in the country by suggesting policy recommendations that can be adopted to improve so, as well as engaging key players in improving the availability of food in Uganda both for domestic consumption and export. This is mostly through advocating for modern agriculture in support of the National Development Plan and Vision 2040 for Uganda. Farming is still dominated by smallholder farmers and thus GRC envisages commercialized farming in Uganda with emphasis on cooperative farming through a conducive social and economic policy environment.

Health

Health is very vital for survival of every human and non-human being. The health sector of Uganda is still weak although there have been improvements over years. Across all the regions of Uganda, the health centres are not evenly distributed. There have been tireless government efforts to promote the sector but there is still a gap to build it to international levels and building well-facilitated health centres across the country. Through research and advocacy programmes, GRC partners with key players in research and policy advocacy to promote the health status of the people of Uganda right from grassroots.

Capacity Building

In so many organizations, both individual staff and management usually find themselves with limited skills to run their organizations. This limits the smooth running of the organization, result into high subcontracting costs and other related costs. GRC comes in to offer capacity building to its partner organizations to promote staff and organizational efficiency and effectiveness.

Environment

Like any other country, Uganda’s environment has been affected by changes caused by both natural and human factors. Gateway  Research Centre works towards advocating for favourable policies that protect Uganda’s environment for the survival of both human and animal lives. It partners with environmental supportive organizations both locally and internationally to emphasize and implement the best practices which can be adopted to revamp formerly degraded areas and conserving the existing intact environment
